PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) is a chain of DNA fragments purified from salmon, chosen because its structure is so similar to human DNA that the skin treats it as its own. When placed in the skin it does two things at once: it provides the raw nucleotide building blocks cells need to repair and renew, and it activates a receptor (adenosine A2A) that dials down inflammation and boosts blood supply and tissue regeneration. Polynucleotide preparations have been used in Italy and Korea for years in wound healing and skin repair, and PDRN "skin boosters" have become one of the fastest-growing categories in regenerative aesthetics worldwide.

In microneedling, a PDRN serum — often formulated with hyaluronic acid — is applied through the open channels during and after treatment. The effect is distinctly different from a collagen-only treatment: the skin is calmer afterward, hydration is deeper and longer-lasting, and the surface develops that smooth, luminous quality that reads as healthy before it reads as "treated."

A few facts worth knowing

• PDRN is roughly 95% structurally compatible with human DNA, which is why it is so well tolerated.

• It is the ingredient behind the "salmon sperm facial" headlines; the product is highly purified polynucleotides, nothing more.

Not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over active infection, cold sores or open lesions, within six months of isotretinoin, with a history of keloids, or with a known fish or product allergy. Deep scarring and significant laxity are better served by other options; we will tell you.

With numbing, a warm vibration and brief sharper moments on bony areas. You leave pink and dewy; because PDRN calms the skin, redness usually settles within 12–24 hours and tightness is minimal. Redness, mild swelling, dryness and pinpoint bleeding during treatment; occasional bruising or temporary breakouts; rarely, sensitivity to a serum component (patients with fish allergy should tell us) or post-inflammatory darkening if sun is not avoided.
